First things first, you’ll need to make sure your window is evenly square in order for the shutters to fit correctly.
Measure the window recess diagonally from corner to corner in both directions. If both of your measurements are the same, this means your window is square, and suitable for shutters.
If your measurements have a variance of 15mm or more, shutters may not be suitable. However, in some cases, you may still be able to order a shutter with a ‘Z frame’.
You can also check for runoff on your window using a spirit level, positioning it on the windowsill, left hand recess wall, right hand recess wall, and the ceiling of the recess. It is normal to have a slight variance here, however if there is a substantial runoff you may need to adjust your measurements accordingly.
The type of frame you choose will depend on where within your recess you plan on installing your shutters and whether your window has a significant amount of run-off.
L Frames allow you to position your shutters at the front of the recess, with panels that open flat against the wall.
These are positioned at the front end of the window recess and protrude outwards, creating a look much like architrave style frames.
Please Note: When choosing your frame type, you should always be aware of any obstructions such as handles, windowsills, or windows that tilt inwards.
Here we’ve illustrated some of the most commonly seen side profile poistions, but for specifics please refer to the measuring guide for your chosen shutter style, and the more information sections on the product of your choice.
Once you’ve checked your window is suitable for shutters and know where in your recess you want to fit them, it’s time to decide which style you’d like.
Each shutter style can be measured differently based on where you’ll be installing it in your recess, and whether you opt for an L or Z frame type. Depending on which style you choose, there may also be extra measuring required for things like mid rails and divide heights.
